Arcane magic is a form of magic believed to have been used in the "dark ages". It is a branch of magic that is very broad, and has very few limits so long as the practitioner is well-trained in the magic. Arcane magic has been around the longest, and is one of the most difficult to learn because it is so rarely used, and so complex. This form of magic uses spell circles regardless of which spell it is, be it in a book page or one that they've handmade themselves. These spell circles are also the most dangerous to make a mistake on, as they will often backfire with potentially lethal results. Someone trained in arcane magic will often be considered a "wizard" or "sorcerer" depending on their antics.
Arcane magic has its own language, and to understand the language would be to understand how to construct your own spells. This is a master-level capability, requiring a lifetime of practice and studying in order to attain.
Spell Circles:
Spell circles are a necessary part of Arcane magic, as most arcane magic draws from both the mage as well as the land he/she is performing the magic on. That having been said, arcane magic is not necessarily the quickest of magic, however it is by far one of the most potent, since it draws from practically limitless sources. But for that very same reason, mastering the manipulation of the mana of the land is a very lengthy period of time, and often is never completely done. It is why so many "wizards" often have difficulty doing just what they want to do, when they want to do it.
Wands/Staves/"Conductors":
Conductors are items, typically wands or staves, as they are made to conduct the usage of mana efficiently. However, anything exterior item can be a conductor for arcane magic; very rarely will arms be very good conductors, however, through extensive training, it is not impossible. The more powerful your conductor, be it through craft, imbuing, or other methods of bolstering a conductor's potency, the more efficient the spell will be.
Portals:
The creation of portals is strictly an arcane magic; one who has not trained in arcane magic cannot create portals. And even those that can create portals have to know their destination intimately before being able to create a portal there, else the portal will not be created. One cannot create a portal from Sh'rutal to Nhimry if one has never been to Nhimry.
Arcane magic is also the source of the infamous "fire ball", "lightning bolt", and "frost beam". This is how it is occasionally overlapping with Psionics, however arcane magic cannot control these elements, but rather, call them forth and use them offensively/for whatever purpose they desire. As long as the spell circle has the symbols that "spell out" the effect you desire, or you chant the arcane language for it instead, then it will work exactly as you told it to, via either method. Also note, some more complex arcane spells require both spell circle as well as incantation.
